Professional and Personal profile

Mr Bhutiani qualified (MBBS) and obtained his Master’s Degree (MS) in General Surgery from the University of Delhi. He has been practising in the UK since 1978. He was granted the Fellowship (FRCS) of the Royal College of Surgeon’s, England in 1980. He completed his surgical training at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School in Dundee under the guidance of Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri, a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery and in North East England with Mr W. W. Wilson, a renowned examiner at The Royal College of Surgeons, England. He obtained further specialist training in General and Vascular Surgery with Mr J.D Lewis at Northwick Park Hospital. In these posts he obtained extensive experience in Gastro-Intestinal, Colonic, Paediatric and vascular Surgery.

It was the disturbing site of seeing an ever increasing number of relatively healthy patients contracting hospital borne infections such as MRSA, when admitted for simple operations, that led Mr Bhutiani to set up and run the first purpose built Day Care Unit in North West London Hospital NHS Trust in 1990.  Since the success of the unit, he has been at the forefront of Day Surgery and has recently pioneered the “Walk In Walk Out” (WIWO) Hernia Clinic, the First in the NHS, at ACAD unit. This totally patient centred clinic is widely acclaimed by patients, their relatives and the General Practitioners. Mr Bhutiani continues to look into techniques to make day surgery less uncomfortable and more widely available and acceptable.

He has extensive clinical experience and interest in general and laparoscopic Day surgery. One of his special interest is Paediatric surgery in Day care setting so that children do not have to stay in the hospital, for elective procedures. He is developing techniques so that elderly patients with other illnesses, which make them unsuitable for general anaesthesia, can have their operation under local anaesthesia with minimal discomfort. He is a committed teacher for medical students, junior doctors and the surgeons in training from Imperial College, School of Medicine, where he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer and an examiner for OSCE and MBBS examinations. He has been honoured with teaching excellence award in 2009.He is also a Faculty Member with the Royal College of Surgeons for a number of college-approved courses such as, ‘Basic Surgical Skills’ and ‘Care of Critically Injured Surgical Patients’. He is involved in teaching and training, general practitioners and the nurse practitioners wishing to learn basic surgical operations. He is an examiner for GP (GPWSI) learning to do minor surgery.
